Cords got started in the late summer of 1977. I was actually late in delivering my annual album for Passport Records, but I had some pretty good excuses. First of all, there had been Peter Gabriel's first solo album recorded in the fall of 1976 which had followed a spring and summer my of touring with Nektar. By the time that tour was over, and IGTB was released, then there was time to begin writing and recording a new Synergy album. Me, holding the modified Dan Armstrong plexiglas guitar that had the pickups for the digital pitch extractor at Russ Hamm's workbench, late 1977 or early 1978.

With their third album, Cords, Synergy began to repeat some of their ideas without expanding them greatly. There is still plenty of provocative, rewarding music on the album, but it doesn't quite match the freshness or brilliance of the first two records.

This album was recorded using only electronic music devices. Finally guitars… sort of.

This album was originally released as Passport PB-6000 in 1978 as a clear vinyl LP distributed by Arista Records. It was later distributed by Jem/Passprt Records also as a clear vinyl disk with slightly altered cover artwork. Other labels distributed in non-US territories. DJ copies and occasional manufacturing runs were pressed on traditional black vinyl making the black disks less comon. Cords was issued in a limited run on CD in 1986 as Passport PBCD-6000.

This new CD reissue is taken from the original analog studio mixes done in the spring of 1978 and does not contain the limiting or frequency rolloffs necessary for the original LP mastering. Audio refinements and corrections that current digital technology permits have been used to further reconstruct the sound of the original studio mixes. Though the transfer is the best possible at this time, some evidence of the original analog source is audible at times.

Digital audio preperation at the Synergy Studio, June, 1997 using Macintosh-based Digidesign Sound Designer II and Masterlist CD software. Additional DSP work including noise shaping and redithering to 16 bit audio performed using C1, Q10, Renaissance Compressor and L1 DSP plug-in modules from ks Waves Ltd.; and DINR from Digidesign.
