Lucas MacFadden (born October 4, 1972), better known as Cut Chemist, is an American DJ and record producer. He is a former member of Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli. He has collaborated with DJ Shadow on a number of projects. He graduated from University of California, Los Angeles in 1997. Lucas McFadden, or Cut Chemist as he’s known professionally, fell into the darkest time of his life. After serving a 30-day stint in jail for a DUI, he was met with a 1-2 deadly punch: both his uncle and his father passed away unexpectedly. It was a moment in his life which sent him careening further into blackness, and he was unsure if he’d ever be able to make music again. It was 2010, and he was one-third the way through what would become Die Cut, his first solo record in 12 years, out March 2. In many ways, it has brought him back to the start. Cut Chemist has been recording and performing for over twenty years. Cut first became known as a founding member of both the rap group Jurassic Five and the Grammy award winning Latin funk outfit, Ozomatli. He has also made a series of cult-classic colllaborations with DJ Shadow, that led the two to a headlining gig at the Hollywood Bowl in 2007, a first for "turntablist," spinning all 45's. Cut Chemist released his debut album "The Audience is Listening" on Warner Bros. The title track was used on a worldwide campaign for Apple's Ipod Nano

In mid-1997 Cut Chemist recorded his album debut, Live at the Future Primitive Sound Session, with Shortkut of Invisibl Skratch Piklz. Two years later, he teamed up with DJ Shadow and performed a series of events in San Francisco. Brainfreeze is a live recording of a rehearsal for one of those shows, and became a popular and hard-to-find album. In 2001 the duo followed up its previous success with Product Placement, a studio record that stylistically followed the pattern of Brainfreeze (two long tracks, two DJs).

Cut Chemist makes frisky, gleeful funk that touches on Brazilian samba, surf rock, and even polka, without losing the beat. Cut Chemist became known through the Los Angeles-based rap group Unity Committee, and debuted on vinyl on the B-side of Unity Committee's 1993 single, "Unified Rebelution". The track, "Lesson 4: The Radio" was an ovation of Double Dee and Steinski's "Lessons 1-. Preceding the vinyl release, Unity Committee formed Jurassic 5, along with another group, Rebels of Rhythm.
