The beluga, or white whale, is one of the smallest species of whale. Their distinctive color and prominent foreheads make them easily identifiable. Unlike most other whales, the beluga has a very flexible neck that enables it to nod and turn its head in all directions. Belugas generally live together in small groups known as pods. Belugas can also copy a variety of other sounds. These whales are common in the Arctic Ocean's coastal waters, though they are found in subarctic waters as well. Arctic belugas migrate southward in large herds when the sea freezes over. National Geographic Maps.
Beluga whales live in the high latitudes of the northern hemisphere in cold Arctic and sub-Arctic waters. Some populations have decided to put down roots and are resident in one particular area, for example the Cook Inlet in Alaska where unfortunately their numbers are in decline and they are recognised as being ‘Critically Endangered’. Others, however, undertake seasonal migrations to and from their favourite feeding and breeding grounds, the latter of which can be several hundred miles up-river.
Whale sounds are used by whales for different kinds of communication. The mechanisms used to produce sound vary from one family of cetaceans to another. Marine mammals, such as whales, dolphins, and porpoises, are much more dependent on sound for communication and sensation than are land mammals, because other senses are of limited effectiveness in water. Sight is less effective for marine mammals because of the particulate way in which the ocean scatters light.
In the wild, beluga whales use their songs to talk to other members of their pod. They're equipped with well-developed hearing, so the back and forth between whales in a group can get quite chatty. Belugas also use their "melon" for echolocation, using sound to help them navigate in dark waters where visibility may be limited. Beluga whales inhabit the cold waters of the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Arctic Sea. They live mainly in the high latitudes around Canada, Greenland, Russia, and Alaska in the . Belugas are sometimes spotted around northern Europe. Beluga whales prefer shallow waters along the coast, and will swim into river basins and estuaries. They don't seem bothered by changes of salinity, which enables them to move from the salty ocean water to freshwater rivers without issue. Are Beluga Whales Endangered?

My friends just call me Beluga. That comes from the Russian word Belukha which means white. I live in a pod, or a group of about 10 beluga whales, in the arctic and subartic areas of the world during most of the year. During the summer months, I vacation in warmer freshwater estuaries and river basins. Drawing by Lee Ann DiSalvia McWeeney.
