Affirmation The Great Outdoors Empowerment Sunday Afternoon. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Will the Circle Be Unbroken. With all due respect to the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, it took the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band until this album to come up with a merger of rock and country music that worked for both sides and everyone involved. The opening number, "The Grand Ole Opry Song," set the tone for the album, showing that this band - for all of their origins in rock and popular music - were willing to meet country music on its own terms, rather than as a vehicle for embellishment as rock music.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was founded in 1969 in Long Beach, Calif. by Jeff Hanna and Bruce Kunkel. Long Beach wasn't exactly a hot bed of country culture, but the West was seeing an influx of country and roots music by way of bands such as The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers. In 1970, the band recorded the Jerry Jeff Walker-penned "Mr. Bojangles. The stripped-down story song was a departure from the heavily-produced music that ruled Music City in the late 1960s. The boys planned to continue in that vein. The album encouraged younger generations to look to the past for inspiration and collaborate across generations and genres. Will the Circle Be Unbroken proved that whether songs are five years old or 100 years old, there will always be an audience for great music.

Twenty-eight years before O Brother, Where Art Thou?, West Coast country-rockers the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band brought old-school country and bluegrass to the modern-day mainstream by cutting a double album with first-gen country heroes (Roy Acuff, Maybelle Carter) and bluegrass originators (Jimmy Martin, Earl Scruggs). Tackling country classics mostly from the catalogs of the participants, the record bridges generations with its honest, unadorned acoustic feel and a torrent of timeless American tunes.
