The Greatest Living Englishman is the debut solo album by English musician Martin Newell, released in November 1993. It was produced, engineered, and mastered by XTC's Andy Partridge, and recorded in his shed on a budget less than £12,000. The album was well-received by critics and ultimately became the most acclaimed of Newell's career. Partridge was contacted to produce the album after his band XTC had gone on strike against their label Virgin Records

Songs For A Fallow Land - released by Man At the Off Licence in 1985. Martin Newell Songs For A Fallow Land FULL ALBUM.

Songs for a Fallow Land, the Cleaners’ 1985 offering, shifts back into murkier mode with the opening Sun Comes to the Wood. Sterling musical moments like the simple in-construction guitar breaks on Julie Profumo and the quick and just as quickly dispensed-with Beatles nod on Heroin Clones abound throughout.

Julie Driscoll-Brian Auger, JoeTex, Consuelo Velasquez, Todd Rundgren/ Traffic, Keith West and Martin the Newell mumbling over the top and why-oh-whying about the pitiful daytime airplay lists of the Bossy Boots Corporation. This show features tracks from Joe Tex.

A terrific memoir by Martin Newell, the greatest living Englishman. This wonderful 260 page book describes Martin's life from childhood to the mid-1970s, and the end of his Colchester glam rock band Plod. Who is Martin Newell you may be asking? He is a musician, singer, guitarist, songwriter, poet, author, gardener, and all round good guy. His "career" from when this book ends to the present day probably warrants another book. He is reasonably straight forward in his retellings, though will always opt for a joke over any genuinely embarrassing admission.

fallow definition: The definition of fallow is inactive. land plowed but not seeded for one or more growing seasons, as to kill weeds or make the soil richer. the plowing of land to be left idle in this way. In 2004 Newell released an album of light jazz songs, The Light Programme. The album was not particularly successful commercially but his next album A Summer Tamarind returned to his usual style and was much more warmly received. In late 2005 the British singer Richard Shelton released a jazz vocal album called Top Cat with five Newell compositions. Newell's songs have also been recorded by Miki Huber, The Jennifers, Kerry Getz, R. Stevie Moore and Alphaville. Songs for a Fallow Land.

If I didn't truly love this album ("heroin clones" being a high point, no pun intended) I would put a one star rating on this Fixed Identity "remastered" re-release. Either my pressing was especially awful or their source material was the most lo-fidelity, worn-out cassette copy of this album they could find. I'm curious as to what mastering was actually done to these tracks because they sound worse than the hand-dubbed copies Newell himself sent out personally, which were notoriously lofi. I own one, midnight cleaners, and besides having been played enough times that the tracks play about 20% faster than they should, it still sounds quite good. This doesn't. The first time I played it on my turntable I thought the needle was broken. I'm not going to punish the rating of this album by rating this pressing but if anyone else owns a copy please let me know if my copy is an isolated incident or if this version should be altogether avoided.Side note: I own the Captured Tracks remastered 'Wartime Conditions" on vinyl and would recommend that if you want a "Songs for a Fallow Land" record, I would check out the CT version. They're excellent quality and as close to perfectly mastered as possible.
