Touch and Go. Quarterstick. Calexico have always been restless experimenters, juxtaposers and journeymen, crafting a unique fusion of bluesy Mariachi, desert-rock and jazz, and injecting healthy doses of experimentation into the otherwise straightforward records on which they've made guest appearances. Yet, for their innovation and distinctive sound, their albums have always had their weak spots- moments in which their ideas seemed to be running away with the band's ability to execute them.

Feast of Wire does indeed offer a tantalizing array of sounds new and old from Calexico, including more pop-oriented takes on their already eclectic style as well as some different sonic twists. Though the album features plenty of the atmospheric interludes of their previous work - such as the squelchy, piano-based "Stucco" and the cello- and pedal-steel-driven "Whipping the Horse's Eye" - the overall feel of Feast of Wire is one of restraint and refinement. The album's longest song, the gorgeous, film noir/spaghetti western fusion "Black Heart," tops.

Album · 2003 · 16 Songs. Burns takes a few solid turns at the mic, acting as a non-intrusive tour guide to the less-than-perfect world of "Sunken Waltz.

Feast of Wire’ plays like the soundtrack to a spaghetti western condensed into an folky indie rock format. Sparse drumming and pedal steel guitar are covered in Mexican mariachi style horns, synths, accordion and strings to create a very densely layered but always atmospheric sound that conjures up images of the desert. At times you can almost feel the heat. There is a huge amount of variation in ‘Feast of Wire’. The first half of the album contains Calexico’s more folky songs

Calexico: Feast of Wire. On their fourth album, the band twirl their spaghetti - western country-blues into pop, flamenco, jazz, classical and Latin, spawning some of their most arresting songs. However, behind their colourful, sunset melodies, disturbing stories lurk. Their poppiest moment, Not Even Stevie Nicks, is their bleakest, telling - with worrying relish - of a character who listens to the Fleetwood Mac singer as he drives off a cliff.
