Darkbloom is a split EP by Canadian musicians Grimes and d'Eon. It was released on April 18, 2011 as a joint release through Grimes' and d'Eon's respective labels, Arbutus Records and Hippos in Tanks. Darkbloom was conceived together by Grimes and d'Eon but recorded separately. Grimes directed the video for "Vanessa" herself after reportedly being unhappy with the video made for "Crystal Ball". It was Claire Boucher's directorial debut

For Grimes, Darkbloom comes on the heels of a prolific 2010. She released two solid LPs: the melodic and intimate debut Geidi Primes, and the darker, more unified Halfaxa. I'm working on a full-length, which I kind of feel is my first album. And as the only complaint I've got with her side of Darkbloom is that it's too short, this is indeed cause for excitement.

Grimes & d'Eon - Darkbloom (432hz). Grimes - Halfaxa (FULL ALBUM). Grimes - Vanessa (Official Video).

Darkbloom is the first studio extended play, first collaboration and overall third album released by Grimes that was originally a split album with fellow Canadian musician d'Eon.

☆½ ~ I think it's a good/enjoyable album, but many passages are kinda irregular or simply boring. Or consider a donation? End of year lists.

Grimes, d’Eon: Darkbloom. Darkbloom was conceived together, but executed individually, and showcases both artists’ knack for dredging influences from the internet floor, unpicking and re-assigning signifiers until they’re rendered uncanny. Boucher’s ability to craft spooked-out electronic pop from stray strands of aural detritus is particularly extraordinary.

Oh yeah! Reissues of Grimes' first albums may be available. But according to Grimes herself she seems to be very unhappy with this.Look what I found on her tumblr-page:"We want to notify you about the reissue of 3 Grimes previous albums, Geidi Primes, Halfaxa and Darkbloom. (keep reading) Arbutus Records announced the re-release of these 3 albums, BUT we want you to be aware that GRIMES DOESNT HAVE ANY RIGHTS too her own creations/recordings or gets any money out of them. Sad but true, only Arbutus Records have them. If you buy the reissue of these vinyls you support Arbutus records, not Claire. We encourage you to not buy these vinyls from Arbutus."

I'm not going to lie to you, this is current hipsters' music at its most mannered and somehow irritating (including visually - hope there is a joke in there somewhere). Then in my opinion, Grimes' music draws something quite special, and even magical when you hear a song like "Vanessa". Like an envelopping jello of mostly feminine influences, from Kate Bush and Cranes (remember them? they were quite good actually), through Salem and vaguely mystical modern glitchy electropop ; but also 'minimal synth-wave', "Vanessa" is actually one of the best songs of the year 2011 imo, equally dreamy, emotional and twisted. This is aerial, sensual witch music.
