The Piano Quartet in E flat major, Op. 47, by Robert Schumann was written in 1842. It has been described as the "creative double" of Schumann's Piano Quintet, also in E-flat major. It is one of the most frequently performed and recorded piano quartets in the standard repertoire. The work was composed in 1842, during Schumann's "Chamber Music Year. Prior to that year Schumann had completed no chamber music at all with the exception of an early piano quartet (in 1829).
Sample this album Artist - Artist (Sample). 30. Septet in B-Flat Major: I. Adagio: Allegro molto. by Arion Wind Quintet. Adagio: Allegro molto by Arion Wind Quintet. Adagio: Allegro ma non troppo by Joakim Kallhed. Adagio. The Quintet is more anonymous than either of these works but still speaks to the fluency and easy melodic invention that Berwald was always capable of in his music. These performances from Sweden are all in tune with Berwald's tunefulness and naive charm. Tenor Thomas Annmo has just the right light, lilting approach to keep this fragile music from breaking, but pianist Joakim Kallhead and his string- and wind-playing companions manage to inject the right bit of fire into their playing when called for.

The Piano Quintet in Eb, Op. 44 by Schumann was composed in 1842 and performed in public the next year. It is often considered one of his finest compositions and a major work of 19th century chamber music. Its revolutionary instrumentation (combining string quartet with piano) was indicative of the changing technical capabilities of the piano, and the cultural importance the string quartet had acquired. The work alternates chamber-music procedures with concertante-like sections. Prior to 1842, Schumann had written only one chamber piece.
