Bill Direen was in Scotland, the birthplace of his then wife and creative partner Carol Woodward, prior to October shows in London and New York with The Chills and The Verlaines. Inevitably, one of the questions he fielded concerns a song written and recorded with his first group Vacuum in Christchurch in the late 1970s. To help, Bill grafted contributions from Jay Clarkson, Chris Todd, Carol Direen and John Chrisstoffels to his core trio of Greig Bainbridge and Stuart Page. Album highlights include ‘Dublin,’ a fine piece of melancholy folk on which Direen’s ethnic and musical roots show, and ‘Bride Of The Wheel’, another compelling theatre song. Neither was as popular as ‘Alligator’. With Peter Bannan’s colourfully staged video adding a layer of allure to the catchy and swinging tune, ‘Alligator’ chalked up mainstream airplay, which was rare for a NZ indie release.

High Hat is a 1989 album compiling tracks from Boy George's second and third UK and European solo albums, Tense Nervous Headache and Boyfriend.

DIREEN, BILL & THE HAT: The Flavour of the Meat. But it wasn’t until 1989 that Bill and Hamish worked together on a recording project, when Bill visited NYC for the first time, staying downtown for a couple of months. Hamish, Lower East Side resident, invited some musician friends to make up a band; Bill flew a former Bilder up from Gainesville Florida. Bill Direen, vocals, guitars, organs. Gary Olson was the sound engineer. Bill Direen wrote songs 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, the music for 11 and concept charts for the impros. The words for 11 are from . Yeats’ Crazy Jane Grown Old Looks at the Dancers. Track 5 owes a debt to Piere Vidal Old by Ezra Pound, Track 1 to Rainer Fassbinder.

Bill Direen and the hat. An early single by Bill Direen under the Six Impossible Things moniker, it's pretty thin on accompanying information. The back of the picture sleeve has Bill with two other men standing in front of w Kiss concert poster on a street corner, black bars covering their eyes. Quite the line-up for NYE 1982 gig in New Plymouth with Stones, a rare appearance by Tall Dwarfs, Nocturnal Projections and Max Quits (aka the Builders, Bill Direen).
