Verdi wrote Falstaff, which was the last of his 28 operas, as he was approaching the age of 80. It was his second comedy, and his third work based on a Shakespeare play, following Macbeth and Otello. The Complete Recordings. on Deutsche Grammophon and Decca. He was perhaps the greatest conductor of the 20th century. What Karajan gave the orchestra more even than the sound, which was always part of their birthright, was the very, very profound sense of pulse. He had a quite special feeling for sound.
