The Saint-Saens with Daniel Barenboim and the Philadelphia Orchestra was recorded at a time of great personal happiness for du Pre, soon after her wedding to Barenboim in the euphoric period after Israel's victory in the Six-Day War. The Dvorak concerto was recorded live in Stockholm in 1967; the Saint-Saens concerto was recorded live in Philadelphia in 1971. Passion personified! Her playing was extraordinary. What more would she have accomplished had she not suffered so cruelly with a debilating disease and died so young?

The composer Camille Saint-Saëns, an old friend, whom Liszt had once called "the greatest organist in the world", dedicated his Symphony No. 3 "Organ Symphony" to Liszt; it had premiered in London only a few weeks before the death of its dedicatee. Liszt died in Bayreuth, Germany, on 31 July 1886, at the age of 74, officially as a result of pneumonia, which he may have contracted during the Bayreuth Festival hosted by his daughter Cosima. Liszt's own point of view regarding programme music can for the time of his youth be taken from the preface of the Album d'un voyageur (1837). According to this, a landscape could evoke a certain kind of mood. Since a piece of music could also evoke a mood, a mysterious resemblance with the landscape could be imagined.
