French bass virtuoso François Moutin and adventurous New York-born vocalist Kavita Shah present "Interplay," their first duo record of jazz standards and original music adapted to this unique instrumentation. The 11 tracks include legendary guests and octogenarians Martial Solal on piano and NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan on vocals, who join Moutin and Shah on an improvisational journey across lyric-driven and wordless pieces alike. Her 2014 debut album VISIONS, co-produced by guitarist Lionel Loueke, blends the kora and tabla with a jazz quintet to reflect "the insatiably curious mind of an ethnographer, the soul of a poet, and the eye of a painter" (WNPR); it was released on Greg Osby's Inner Circle Music label & France's Naïve Records to great critical acclaim.

Interplay is a meeting of minds and spirits, one that embraces virtuosity, spontaneity, and lyricism through a repertoire of standards and original music adapted to the unique instrumentation of acoustic bass and voice. It features 11 tracks recorded at Sear Sound Studios in New York and Studio le Meudon in Paris. Kavita Shah and Francois Moutin are also joined by their octogenarian mentors–NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan on vocals, considered by many as the pioneer of bass-and-voice duets, and legendary pianist Martial Solal–on two tracks each.

Something is left to be desired for this album, and you'll catch it upon first hearing of the introducing track Toutes directions - that something is definitely missing. Then, it'll immediately be clear that something is the piano. Without the piano's dynamic range, the album imparts a mellow undertone, which is made more prominent by the constant humming of the flute/alto flute by Marianne Spang-Hanssen. The piano is needed to balance out the flute and invigorates particularly the climatic passages - just compare this album to the subsequent "Power Tree" which came about 10 years later and you'll see what a night and day difference it makes when Baptiste Trotignon is on the piano when performing the same work "Toutes directions". The treatment of "Flying Bridge" is similarly quite soft due to the lack of piano, and here it sounds similar to the rendition in the album "Slaughter on 10th Avenue", released 5 years later featuring a bass-cello-soprano trio. However, it is a different sound indeed, and it requires more attentive listening to fully appreciate the nuances. I would give the album a 4 star.
