Check Point Charlie ‎(CD, Album, RE). Gazul Records. I didn’t know what to expect when I first put this disc into my player - I had not even heard of TAZARTES before that day, and the cover - a sleeping child on a pebble beach - gave nothing away. At first I wasn’t sure I’d want to listen to it all the way through, but before long it was on ‘continual play’ all day long. Any single piece from this album there are four tracks, but each one consists of many short pieces taken out of context of the album would probably be far less impressive, but when you hear the entire thing, you cannot help but be impressed.

Traces de Coups" and "La Mort de Berchou," both 15 minutes long, are the strongest compositions, full of bold episodes of musique concrète, impromptu songs at the accordion, and odd assemblages that only (barely) begin to make sense after the third or fourth listen

This was Ghedalia Tazartes' third album, originally released in 1979 and reissued on CD with a more recently recorded third part added on. His strange collages do not fit comfortably with any classification of music, but are rather in a universe of their own, in the same way that material by Harry Partch and Jean Dubuffet seem to defy any previous influences.

Ghédalia Tazartès, born in Paris, 1947 of Spanish Jewish parents from Thessaloniki, is an autodidact, playing the accordion, Tibetan bowl, percussion, flutes, tapes. The voice is his main instrument. He uses it like a shaman to create a unique music. He worked for dance, theater, film, and played worldwide. 20 records are out since 1974.

Any single piece from this album »there are four tracks, but each one consists of many short pieces« taken out of context of the album would probably be far less impressive, but when you hear the entire thing, you cannot help but be impressed. He doesn’t employ any one particular style, so pinning him down to be labelled is impossible - it’s easier to say what he isn’t. It’s not Industrial, neither is it Electronic, although now & then electronic rhythms do surface, and like a U-Boat, blows well-established Electro-Wizards out of the water with a shrug of contempt. Poetry & ‘Verbal Art’ surface in two or three languages, English being one. Strange & quirky rhythms & abstractions run into each other, like Kaleidoscopic Bumper Cars seen through Psylocybin eyes. It’s high & happy music which scampers along where most would fall flat on their faces. One style / theme which really stands out is the Ethnic, or more specifically AFRICAN / INDIAN - influenced tracks. The rhythms - guitar imitating-Inanga with sparse percussion & straining, soaring, wailing vocals - works! It doesn’t sound as if He has decided “Let’s try & make Ethnic music!" - it’s not contrived enough - it sounds too natural, too Earthy to be some false bandwagon jump. This review may give you some idea of what it sounds like, but there are a lot of surprises in store for those who purchase a copy .... pleasant surprises! Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
