The Apothic Gloom represents everything that makes Skeletonwitch the band they are, and adds a darker and more cerebral element to their music that previous releases lacked. At first blush, this may seem counter-intuitive. Though blackened thrash metal is a bit of a niche interest, Skeletonwitch is unquestionably one of the genre's foremost icons, and a shift in sound might appear to cheapen that. The band sounds comfortable with what they're playing yet passionate about playing it, and Clemans' use of a fast, choppy style shows his diversity as a vocalist and how unbelievably well he fits into the band.

Skeletonwitch’s new four-track EP The Apothic Gloom is the debut of new vocalist Adam Clemans (Wolvhammer), replacing Chance Garnette who had been with the band since their early days. Any time a band adds a new vocalist, that brings extra scrutiny from fans who want to hear how it affects the band’s sound. Writing and recording a full-length album can take a lot of time, and Skeletonwitch wanted fans to hear new material with Clemans as soon as possible, which is why they went the EP route.

Skeletonwitch is an American extreme metal band from Athens, Ohio, formed in 2003. The band currently consists of bassist Evan Linger, lead guitarist Nate Garnette, rhythm guitarist Scott Hedrick, and vocalist Adam Clemans. Chance Garnette was fired from the band sometime in late 2014, or early 2015. In Early 2018, drummer Dustin Boltjes left the band; this was likely to pursue being the lead singer of Sacred Leather.
