Samuel Barber is among the finest composers that America has ever produced, much less than one of the greatest of the 20th century. Even as a child, he knew that his destiny was musical composition. In this incredible Sony album, we have Thomas Schippers leading either the New York Philharmonic or Columbia Symphony in performances of Barber's Medea's Dance of Vengeance, Adagio for Strings, Second Essay for Orchestra, Overture to The School for Scandal, Andromache's Farewell, Intermezzo from Vanessa; Menotti's Overture to Amelia al ballo; Berg's Interlude from Wozzeck (Act III); and. d'Indy's Introduction to Fervaal. The works by Barber are performed by the NYPO, while the remaining works are performed by the Columbia SO.

Thomas Schippers (9 March 1930 – 16 December 1977) was an American conductor. He was highly regarded for his work in opera. He conducted world premieres of now well-known music by Gian Carlo Menotti and Samuel Barber. He conducted child actor Chet Allen in a theatrical version of Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors. Schippers was a regular conductor with the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and made recordings with them as well, but in 1970 he finally took a full-time orchestral position with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, succeeding his predecessor at the Metropolitan Opera, Max Rudolf. After making several recordings with them and building the orchestra's international reputation, his career was cut short by his death from lung cancer at 47 in 1977 in New York City, New York.

American Composers : Samuel Barber. New York, Modern Music Quarterly, March-April 1943. The Saddest Music Ever Written. A very rare opportunity to hear Barber conducting an orchestra. With the lyrical and engaging interpretation of Zara Nelsova – preferred to Raya Garbousova, who yet premiered the work -, Barber’s Cello Concerto is a compelling experience. Isaac Stern, Orchestre philharmonique de New York, Leonard Bernstein, John Browning, Orchestre de Cleveland, George Szell, Orchestre de Philadelphie, Eugene Ormandy, Orchestre philharmonique de New York, Thomas Schippers New Symphony Orchestra, Samuel Barber Sony SMK60004. Stern and Bernstein - Barber’s best enemy – give an extremely melancholic and idiomatic reading of the Violin Concerto.

Barber Adagio - Cantelli - New York Philharmonic - 1955. Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings Live. Adagio for Strings dedicated to the heroes and veterans of the United States of America. Four Excursions, op. 20 no. 1: Un Poco Allegro. Toccata Festiva, op. 36. 13:48. Summer Music, op. 31. 11:44. 2: In Slow Blues Tempo. Dover Beach for Voice and String Quartet, op. 3. 08:28. String Quartet, op. 11: Molto allegro e appassionato. 11: Molto adagio.

Andante con moto (Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Thomas Schippers). Andre Kostelanetz; Bruno Walter; Columbia Symphony Orchestra; Eugene Ormandy; Frederica Von Stade; George Szell; Louis Lane; Percy Faith & His Orchestra; Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; Thomas Schippers Porgy and Bess, opera: Summertime. Thomas Schippers, Columbia Symphony Orchestra Intermezzo from Act II of Vanessa, Op. 32. (play).

But on compact disc, the four works are augmented by five more Schippers' recordings: two of Barber's deeply moving Andromache's Farewell with the lovely Martina Arroyo and Barber's elegiac Intermezzo from his opera Vanessa, plus Menotti's rip-roaring Overture to Amelia al ballo, Berg's gut-wrenching Interlude from the last act of Wozzeck and d'Indy's sumptuously. decadent Introduction to Fervaal. If you can have only one Barber disc, this is the one to have.

Barber: Adagio & Pièces diverses. Columbia Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Thomas Schippers.
