The sweet swinging reggae man began with the Tartans, a mid-'60s rock steady vocal group comprised of Russell, Prince Lincoln Thompson, Linbergh "Preps" Lewis, and Cedric Myton; they disbanded after their 1967 hit "Dance All Night" (Federal Records). He soloed from then on, interrupted only by a short stint as Cultural Roots' lead singer, with whom he waxed Money, Sex and Violence for Runn Records

Also the legendary Red Bum Ball, Lloyd & Devon’s hit song for Derrick Morgan’s Hop Records, is refurbished to full effect. This also goes for the 1974 released single Fire Fire on the Duke Reid imprint; a strong message tune with a call for unity. The same theme comes to the fore in the matching Want No War. Next comes the solid Freedom Is A Must, a song he co-wrote with Roy Sweetland.
