I suspect Les Preludes is Liszt's best-known orchestral work, thanks largely to the old "Flash Gordon" serials of the Thirties and Forties, which borrowed extensively from the score. Solti's interpretation of it is among the finest on the market in terms of sheer excitement, so it's good to have that alone. These were recorded with the London Philharmonic in 1977 and they do make Solti's 'Faust' sound like a lullaby. Certainly, both 'Les Preludes' and 'Prometheus' have seldom received such a vigorous treatment, almost savage indeed. It works wonderfully in combination with a spectacular late analogue sound. For my part, these are one of finest renditions of 'Les Preludes' and 'Prometheus' ever committed on disc, worthy of their place beside the amazing versions of Karajan, Golovanov or (only for 'Prometheus') Haitink.
Exclusively for Prime members. Sample this album Artist - Artist (Sample). 1. 30. Liszt: Les Préludes, symphonic poem N., . 7 (after Lamartine). by London Philharmonic Orchestra and Sir Georg Solti. Despite the tinny nature of the recording, which is enhanced greatly when played back with a good equalizer, Solti captured the raw essence of Prometheus being tied to a rocky crag and being attacked by an eagle daily as punishment for giving mankind the gift of fire. Other renditions, including those by Haitink or Masur, pale in comparison.
Franz Liszt composed his Prometheus in 1850, numbering it No. 5 in his cycle of symphonic poems when he revised it in 1855. The work is based on the Greek myth detailing the Titan Prometheus' theft of fire from the gods and is numbered . 9 in the Searle catalogue.
