The Flatlanders are an American country band from Lubbock, Texas, United States, founded in 1972 by Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Butch Hancock. The group garnered little success during their brief original incarnation from 1972 to 1973, but when the individual members found success in their solo careers, interest in The Flatlanders was rekindled with the band reuniting several times since.

Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, and Joe Ely would later distinguish themselves individually, but in the early '70s they were part of an all-acoustic Lubbock, Texas, group that combined traditional country roots with the era's ss mindset. Gilmore's haunting quaver already had the goosebump-inducing, otherworldly feel that would eventually make him a successful solo artist.

The Flatlanders, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, and Joe Ely, were always (and remain) three separate Texas singers and songwriters who just happened to fit in well together. The band of Texans made a record at Shelby Singeleton’s Plantation Records in Nashville back in 1972 called All American Music. It was only released on 8-track tape and soon faded into obscurity. As three of the central group members (Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, and Butch Hancock) became known as talented solo musicians, interest in the old recordings grew.
