The work was recorded by Riccardo Chailly conducting the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1991, (also erroneously identified as the Jazz Suite No. 2) and released on a disc entitled Shostakovich: The Jazz Album (Decca 33702). The opening and closing movements (March and Finale) are based on the "March" from Korzinkina’s Adventures, Op. 59 (1940).
Shostakovich: The Jazz Album. Chailly, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Brautigam. The Jazz Album' is a thoroughly misleading title, since the music on offer here is Schostakovich through and through, albeit somewhat lighter and smoother than it usually sounds. The Jazz Suite no. 2 was actually composed for a variety orchestra rather than a jazz ensemble. Chailly hits his stride in these artistic works, as well as in the virtuoso Piano Concerto, on which the orchestra sinks pleasantly into the background, leaving plenty of room for the two soloists.
