Gheorghe Zamfir is a Romanian musician, known as "The Master of the Pan Flute", a leading figure within the history of international pan flute music. Zamfir is known for playing an expanded version of the traditional Romanian-style pan flute (nai). It would prove to be his only hit single, but it helped pave the way for a consistent stream of album sales in Britain. After nearly a decade-long absence, Romanian pan flute virtuoso Gheorghe Zamfir returns to Canada in January 2006 for a seven-city tour with TRAFFIC STRINGS quintet.

Gheorghe Zamfir (Romanian pronunciation: (listen); born April 6, 1941) is a Romanian pan flute (nai) musician. Zamfir is known for playing an expanded version of nai, of 20 pipes to 22, 25, 28 and 30 pipes to increase its range, and obtaining as many as eight overtones (additionally to the fundamental tone) from each pipe by changing the embouchure. He is known as "The Master of the Pan Flute".

Gheorghe Zamfir is a Romanian artist: composer, interpreter, poet. He was born in Gaiesti, on the 6th of april 1941. Attracted to music he entered the Gaiesti Music School, hoping to study the accordion. Instead, he was assigned to a pan flute class where promptly demonstrated an extraordinary ability with the instrument. In 1955 enters the Music School in Bucharest (today- the Musical High School "Dinu Lipatti) in the class of Fanica Luca.
