If You Could Read My Mind" is a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. It reached number one on Canadian music charts and was his first recording to appear on the American music charts, reaching number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in February 1971. Later in the year it reached number 30 in the UK. The song also reached number one for one week on the Billboard Easy Listening chart, and was the first of four Lightfoot releases to reach number one.
Tim from Clarkdale, AzAgree with most of you. Their are nuggets of truth sprinkled all over the place in these posts. The illustrious singer-songwriter says the words to "If You Could Read My Mind," released 40 years ago, came to him in a couple of hours in a vacant Toronto home that was up for sale at a time when he was experiencing marital problems. I was of course going through some emotional trauma leading up to a separation, so that of course manifested itself in that particular song on that particular afternoon," Lightfoot, 71, said by phone from his Toronto home. If I could read your mind, love, What a tale your thoughts could tell. Just like a paperback novel, The kind the drugstores sell. Then you reached the part where the heartaches come, The hero would be me.
If you could read my mind. If you could If you could If you could read my mind (repeat). If you could read my mind love What a tale my thoughts would tell Just like an old time movie 'Bout a ghost from a wishing well. If you could read my mind love What a tale my thoughts would tell Just like a paperback novel The kind that drugstores sell
on a bed Of bloodstained words, Ringing in my head. If you could read my mind, You’d see the shadows That lurk within me; You’d hear the bellows, Screeching the words I’m tired, I’m a failure, I’m stupid – I know it sounds stupid, It’s pathetically foolish And seems too . If you could read my mind, You’d feel the tears I had ever failed to cry; You’d see the people That make the weak weaker; You’d see the monsters That consume my head; You’d hear the hollers That failed to be freed; You’d see the heart That still bleeds and bleeds.
It seemed as though "If You Could Read My Mind" was everywhere in the early months of 1971. Its appeal crossed genres and age groups, and its simplicity and acoustic arrangement fit in nicely with the burgeoning singer/songwriter scene then storming the airwaves and record stores. If You Could Read My Mind" was not the first track released as a single from this album; Lightfoot's recording of Kris Kristofferson's soon-to-be-classic "Me and Bobby McGee," the only non-original in this collection, preceded it but barely dented the charts.
Tim Healy is sitting in a chair, quietly taking everything in. I used to tell Matty he was John Lennon, he says. And now he’s on a roll. There’s this elite thing, where everybody’s petrified of the idea that you could want your music to reach lots of people, but that’s what excites me. The idea of starting in a room and then bleeding out across humanity, the idea of one of my songs being on in a car while people are having an argument that really matters to them, or a song being on when somebody has that moment when they feel really alive.
