My Name Is Albert Ayler is the debut album by American free jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler recorded in Copenhagen in 1963 and first released on the Dutch Debut label. Introduction by Albert Ayler - 1:15.
Albert Ayler (/ˈaɪlər/; July 13, 1936 – November 25, 1970) was an American avant-garde jazz saxophonist, singer and composer. After early experience playing R&B and bebop, Ayler began recording music during the free jazz era of the 1960s. However, some critics argue that while Ayler's style is undeniably original and unorthodox, it does not adhere to the generally accepted critical understanding of free jazz.

Albert Ayler: If people don't like it now, they will. The first Ayler album I acquired was called "May Name is Albert Ayler" and I played it until the grooves bled. More recently I was gifted by a dear friend a box set – truly a beautiful box with all manner of Ayler memorabilia inside – photos, posters, facsimile articles, petals from his favourite flowers – and nine CDs of unreleased material
Ayler's 1963 debut album is titled My Name Is Albert Ayler. It's also the title of a recent Swedish documentary on the firebrand saxophonist. The film's director, Kasper Collin, thought there was a good story in the black American's apprenticeship touring Sweden with conventional dance bands in 1962, the confusion his intense originality prompted from musicians and listeners alike, and his triumphant return as a headliner with the touring Newport Jazz Festival in 1966. Then he discovered some extraordinary footage. That is the beautiful shot of Albert naked from his chest and up - it's like a 30-40 seconds long shot, but he's just looking into the camera, and he has beautiful, burning eyes," Collin says. It was very, very moving. So I kind of decided then, if this is the only footage, we try to make at least a small film.
It's difficult to tell if Ayler's tonality on the horn is intentional or the rhythm section is just so stick-in-the-butt rigid that he sounds more out of tune than he is. Ayler plays tenor on the rest of the program, which includes "Summertime," "Billie's Bounce," "On Green Dolphin Street," and ". The session becomes irritating in that the rhythm section refuses to give Ayler the room he needs: they play straight bop no matter what, as if they couldn't play anything else

Albert Ayler (born July 13th, 1936 in Cleveland Heights, Ohio – New York City, November 1970) was the most primal of the free jazz musicians of the 1960s. He possessed a deep blistering tone-achieved by using the stiffest plastic reeds he could find on his tenor saxophone-and a broad, pathos-filled vibrato that came right out of church music.
