Sister Sledge is an American musical vocal group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Formed in 1971, the group consisted of sisters Debbie, Joni, Kim and Kathy Sledge. The siblings achieved international success at the height of the disco era. The year 1979 saw the release of their breakthrough album We Are Family, which peaked at number three on the US Album Chart and included the 1979 US top ten singles "He's the Greatest Dancer" and "We Are Family"

Sister Sledge are undisputedly one of the utmost iconic female collections of all time. As the pages of the Chicago Tribune have proclaimed, Sister Sledge has the stuff legends are made of. Sisters, Debbie, Joni, and Kim (sister Kathy stepped away from the ensemble in 1989), are daughters of Florez Sledge and celebrated Broadway performer Edwin Sledge. In 1997 Joni Sledge produced the group’s 9th studio album, African Eyes, which was nominated for a Grammy as Best Produced CD, and remains one of their finest artistic achievements. In December 2000, Sister Sledge played at The White House for the President and First Lady at the closing Christmas party of the Clinton Administration.

Inscribed by Joni/Sister Sledge on front artwork. Cd has a few light scratches. Artwork/case are very good. I'll say this, the music isn't half bad. Actually, I'm starting to like the album. It had been a while since Sister Sledge had released anything, atleast in the states, but this new release "African Eyes" is well worth the wait. Sisters Debbie, Joni and Kim Sledge return with a more mature sound that covers every base from jazz to house to pop. From the opening number, the very inspiring "Walking In The Light" (produced by the jazz fusion group Incognito) to the very sweet closing number "Cry for Soweto" the sisters take you on a trip that should be traveled over and over again.

Sister Sledge is four sisters whose last names really are Sledge. They were a backup band for various artists before releasing this album, which was their first. This was their biggest hit; their first single, "He's The Greatest Dancer," was also a Top-10 hit in the US. This was written and produced by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers. The group recorded this in one take. Kathy Sledge, who sang lead, did not know the lyrics ahead of time. Rodgers and Edwards gave her each line through her headphones as it came up to make it sound spontaneous. This was used in commercials for an early version of Diet Pepsi called Pepsi Free, with the obvious line, "We are Pepsi Free.
