The first album was really in the wave of its time presenting a five movement suite and two longer tracks, often mixing all kinds of styles of music. Anything was a fair game as long as it sounded good, and these guys had no problems making everything sound good. Right off the bat, the eponymous track is a real corker, rivalling with Santana's Soul Sacrifice and Traffic's Freedom Rider, twisting your head all around as there are so many things happening left, right and centre.

Most importantly, though, The Best of Mandrill includes every song Mandrill's known for, in a punchy sequencing that does justice to the band's uncommon style.

MANDRILL is a world fusion, funk jazz funk music artist. For over three decades, Mandrill has been a staple in the World Music scene and one of Funk and R&B’s most progressive bands. Widely sampled, their signature sound can be heard on numerous albums including Kanye West’s Grammy Award-winning College Dropout. A family of ts, that blends Caribbean culture and urban America, Mandrill pioneered the Jazz Fusion movement.

I love the great songs on this set: Fencewalk, Git it all, Hang Loose and others. But Positive was one of the bests songs they released. One whole side of the orginal album of the same name was this song. 5 or 6 different versions but they flowed together perfectly. I believe it was a two album set. (We are talking over 20 years ag. It was not a big seller but it was one of the best.

The Best of Mandrill. Other albums by Mandrill. We Are One. Just Outside of Town. Rounding up the greatest grooves from the band's first five albums, right up until it left for United Artists in 1975, The Best of Mandrill is a top compilation for one of the most freewheeling bands of the early '70s. Unsurprisingly for a funk group, Mandrill excelled at recording catchy, well-played material with deep grooves, though unlike many bands, all of it was tempered by an experimentalist bent and a restless desire to explore many different avenues (occasionally in the same song).
