Bruckner and Morton Feldman may not be the likeliest of musical companions, but Michael Gielen's discs with the SWR orchestra has made a feature of such unexpected pairings. The Bruckner 8 here dates from studio sessons in 1990, Coptic Light from a concert in Freiburg seven years later; the competition on disc in the Bruckner is of course much fiercer than it is for the Feldman, but both performances might be worth sampling.

Performed by the Ensemble Avantgarde, and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin conducted by Michael Morgan, this is a very sensitive and fine performance of the new music classic "Durations I-. In these five innovative pieces, the composer gave over control of the duration parameter entirely to the performers (there are only notes without stems, therefore no divided rhythm) - the pulse.
