Various artists, The Harder They Come soundtrack (1973) There was a lot more to the early years of reggae than Bob Marley & the Wailers, and the best of the rest is brilliantly summarized on this soundtrack album for one of the best fictional music films ever made. Once they realized they weren’t going to get any Wailers tracks, the filmmakers chose brilliantly. As the charismatic outlaw/singer/star of the movie, Jimmy Cliff sang half the songs, but there’s not a bad cut in the original soundtrack’s dozen.

Country singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams’ fifth studio album was a painstaking one, taking six years to make after having been recorded twice from scratch. The emotive songs were a hit and it was her first album to go gold. Selected track: ‘Jackson’: A gritty tearjerker. The Grammy Album Of The Year for 2015 was the first album Beck had released for six years following health problems and is full of sweetly melancholic songs. Beck said that the impressive songs on Morning Phase felt personal, direct and uninhibited.

Volume 1: 1. Don McLean - American Pie 2. Jim Croce - I Got a Name 3. Dan Fogelberg - Leader of the Band 4. Janis Joplin - Get It While You Can 5. Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl 6. Seals & Crofts - Diamond Girl 7. Michael Murphy - Wildfire 8. Joan Baez - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down 9. The Hollies - The Air That I Breathe 1.

Soft rock was often derived from folk rock, using acoustic instruments and putting more emphasis on melody and harmonies. It reached its commercial peak in the mid- to late 1970s with acts like the reformed Fleetwood Mac, whose Rumours (1977) was the best selling album of the decade. Some of the most successful singer-songwriter artists were Cat Stevens, Steve Winwood and Elton John  .

Singers & Songwriters: The 1960's. Time-Life Music's Singers & Songwriters series, its title a mild corruption of "singer/songwriter," is devoted primarily to the singer/songwriter movement of the early '70s, at least as far as that movement can be traced by sticking almost exclusively to major hit singles, which has meant that the series also has incorporated other styles of soft rock.

The singer-songwriter movement emerged after the more s acts of the previous decade began to wane. Progressive rock also made headway, Pink Floyd, Genesis and Rush leading the way. Then came disco, which saw a backlash shortly thereafter. I’ve heard My Sweet Lord and Wah-Wah on radios in shops and delis at various times and always felt that the songs were timeless. I can listen to Harrison’s twanging lead guitar and mellow voice no matter what mood I’m in, and somehow he makes it all seem brighter. The Stooges’ debut album, though a loud and burly one, didn’t truly capture the untamed fury of the Detroit band’s performances. So to truly make an album as brutal and painful as Fun House, they had to ditch previous producer John Cale and take it back to rock & roll’s roots, asking Kingsmen keyboardist Don Gallucci to fill-in instead.

The mercurial er's 25-year track record stands on its own: writing or co-writing 30 Top 20 R&B singles for himself or with the Chicago-based group Public Announcement, chart-topping assistance for Puff Daddy, Sparkle and Kelly Price; and the first song to ever debut at Number One on the Hot 100, Michael Jackson's "You Are. Not Alone. Nilsson was a pioneer of the Los Angeles studio sound, a crucial bridge between the baroque psychedelic pop of the late Sixties and the more personal singer-songwriter era of the Seventies. Overdubbing his flawless voice, he was his own angelic choir on songs like "1941" and the Beatles medley "You Can't Do That," and he caught the ear of Beatles publicist Derek Taylor, who bought a box of Nilsson records to send to friends.

Best song of the 70s. Its simple this is the greatest song ever. Come on This is what the 70s was all about. Everyone should help by voting to bring this song to the top 5, and also, Thunder Road, Jungleland, and Backstreets belong on this list. The fact that there are ZERO Bruce Springsteen songs here makes me want to cry.

Listen to the best songs of the 1970s on Apple Music and this site. Foi a mais linda historia de amor, sings the Brazilian singer Ben: It was the most pretty story of love. Ben’s original version of the song, recorded for his 1972 album Ben, is a subdued gem. But the version recorded for his massive 1976 crossover album Africa Brasil exudes joy, sparks flying from every exuberant note. This track is really three ’70s reggae classics in one: Max Romeo’s Chase the Devil, Prince Jazzbo’s Croaking Lizard, and Lee Perry’s mix of both with his own vocals. All this and more gets tossed in the pot in the nearly seven-minute-long Disco Devil.
