Soprano Pretty Yende made a big splash with her debut album, A Journey, which musically reenacted her path from small-town South Africa to Europe's major operatic stages. On that album she had both star quality and rough spots, and it was a matter of some interest to learn whether she was just a novelty or a major new voice. As it happens, Yende's second album, Dreams, does not answer the question.

SOUTH AFRICAN SOPRANO Pretty Yende follows her successful debut album, A Journey, with the impressive Dreams, featuring bel canto mad scenes and other coloratura selections chosen from characters who find escape in dream lives, seeking love or hope for the future. Yende’s brilliant technical singing skills continue to mature; more important, here she reaches new depths of interpretation, explores a wider range of vocal colors and finds more warmth in her voice. These qualities, coupled with her charming personal story, have led to her meteoric rise in the opera world, culminating in leading.

With Dreams Pretty Yende also refers to her very own fairytale that continues to this day. Her fairytale like ascent, reflected in her debut album A Journey, has been all the more remarkable for beginning only at the age of 16 in the small remote town of Piet Retief – about 200 miles from Johannesburg. Her life was transformed when she heard Delibes’s ‘Flower Duet’ from Lakmé on a British Airways television advert. Although she knew nothing about opera at first, she was so seduced by the magical sound of the duet that she immediately determined to pursue her path as an opera singer.

South African soprano Pretty Yende’s Cinderella story of a career is like catnip to Sony’s marketing department, who have now ensured that the singer’s first two recital discs are part of an autobiographical narrative, and packaged in pastelly, pre-teen shades under wafty, abstractly aspirational titles. But both last year’s A Journey and this year’s Dreams deserve better. Yende and her recordings are each capable of standing on their own merits, as this collection of bel canto makes abundantly clear  . Yende certainly has the skills for this dramatic range. Her lyric coloratura is, as the booklet note acknowledges, heavier than most current international Lucias, but with it comes a wonderfully anchored quality, a sense of depth even in the fluffiest of filigree semiquaver passages.
