Karl Theodor Jaspers (/ˈjæspərz/; German: ; 23 February 1883 – 26 February 1969) was a German-Swiss psychiatrist and philosopher who had a strong influence on modern theology, psychiatry, and philosophy. After being trained in and practicing psychiatry, Jaspers turned to philosophical inquiry and attempted to discover an innovative philosophical system. He was often viewed as a major exponent of existentialism in Germany, though he did not accept the label.

Wolfgang Schadewaldt (15 March 1900 in Berlin – 10 November 1974 in Tübingen) was a German classical philologist working mostly in the field of Greek philology and a translator. He also was a professor of University of Tübingen and University of Freiburg. The son of a Berlin doctor, Schadewalt studied classical philology, archaeology, and German literature at the Friedrich Wilhelm University (now the Humboldt University of Berlin) under Ulrich von rff and Werner Jaeger. After his doctorate (1924) and Habilitation (1927), he was a Docent at the university.
Karl Jaspers (1883–1969) began his academic career working as a psychiatrist and, after a period of transition, he converted to philosophy in the early 1920s. Throughout the middle decades of the twentieth century he exercised considerable influence on a number of areas of philosophical inquiry: especially on epistemology, the philosophy of religion, and political theory.
Wolfgang Schadewaldt is one of the most important German classical scholar and effective mediator of ancient Greek literature in the 20th century. Egil A. Wyller described him as a "master of those who know there. In his work Schadewaldt dealt with all genres of ancient Greek poetry, epic, lyric poetry, drama and in addition also with the philosophy and historiography. Among the students Schadewaldt include Wolfgang Kullmann and Hellmut Flashar who studied in Berlin with him, as well as the ancient historian Alexander Demandt. A wider public is Schadewaldt known as a translator of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, in addition to the transfers of Johann Heinrich Voss, as the best translations of both epics are considered to German.
