Gunter Hampel (born 31 August 1937) is a German jazz vibraphonist, clarinettist, saxophonist, flautist, pianist and composer born in Göttingen, Germany, perhaps best known for his album The 8th of July 1969 that included fellow musicians Anthony Braxton, Willem Breuker and Jeanne Lee. Jeanne, now deceased, was Gunter's wife.

Seit 1969 lebt Gunter Hampel in New York. Anfang der 1970er gründete er dort die Galaxy Dream Band, die fast 30 Jahre Bestand hatte. Die zentralen Akteure der Galaxy Dream Band waren neben ihm seine damalige Lebensgefährtin, die Jazzsängerin Jeanne Lee, und der Klarinettist Perry Robinson. Weiterhin gründete Hampel das "Gunter Hampel-Johannes Schleiermacher Duo", das "Gunter Hampel European Trio" in dem neben Hampel und Schleiermacher noch Bernd Oezsevim spielte. 2001 entstand die Gunter Hampel Music + Dance Improvisation Company. Am 28. Oktober 2007 verlieh die Stadt Göttingen Hampel ihre „Ehrenmedaille. Für sein Lebenswerk wurde er im November 2007 mit dem Deutschen Jazzpreis (Preis) ausgezeichnet.
