The Miraculous Mandarin (Hungarian: A csodálatos mandarin; German: Der wunderbare Mandarin) Op. 19, Sz. 73 (BB 82), is a one act pantomime ballet composed by Béla Bartók between 1918–1924, and based on the story by Melchior Lengyel. Premiered November 27, 1926 in Cologne, Germany, it caused a scandal and was subsequently banned on moral grounds.

The Divertimento is the piece that is probably less familiar to audiences in general than the other two works are. It was written in 1939 at the behest of Bartok’s patron Paul Sacher, and is scored for strings alone. On this disc it is placed effectively between the Music for Strings and the strenuous Miraculous Mandarin score, serving as a kind of intermezzo or entr’acte. Sir Georg Solti had a special affinity for Bartok and even studied with him as a youth in Hungary. So it is not surprising that this album of Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta, The Miraculous Mandarin Suite, and Divertimento with the CSO was very successful. Solti gives each work its full due. The music is exciting to begin with, especially the Miraculous Mandarin Suite, and Solti just adds his usual fireworks to it.
