In the early 1960s, Whitaker, who has died aged 81, worked as a songwriter for the producer Bunny Lewis and the Denmark Street publisher Freddie Poser. The songs he wrote included Christine Quaite's I'm Hoping, while Barbara Kay recorded That's What Angels Are For and the cockney novelty Chips With Everything, not a song of which he was particularly proud.
