Yogic exercises are in fact called Yoga poses (asanas), an asana being a steady pose. Yogic exercises, when done correctly, influence and positively energize all the systems of the body: the circulatory system, the muscular and skeletal systems, the endocrine system, the respiratory system, the digestive system, and most importantly, the nervous system. In terms of muscles, Yogic exercises not only strengthen the muscles but also stretch them. Swami Vishnu-devananda states that being free from identification with the body, the mind, and ego consciousness is the only way to reach a state of complete relaxation. Today, millions of people practise the exercises that Swami Vishnudevananda began teaching in the West fifty years ago. Gyms, fitness centres and wellness hotels offer yoga classes, and yoga is finding new practitioners everyday. The founding of more than 70 Sivananda centres and ashrams around the world is proof of the enormous achievement of the dynamic yoga master. In 1969, Swami Vishnudevananda laid the cornerstone for the systematic spread of yoga by conducting the first Yoga Teachers’ Training Course (TTC) in the West. What began as a vision has brought forth 43,000 teachers – with another thousand added each year. They spread the teachings of classical yoga in health clubs, schools, doctor’s offices, universities, hospitals and prisons. The Beatles weren’t the only ones topsy-turvy.

Though he never visited the United States, this Indian guru had a profound influence on yoga in America. Born into a devout South Indian family in 1887, Swami Sivananda, then named Kuppuswamy, began his career as a dedicated physician, a natural calling for the deeply compassionate youth who fed the poor and hungry who passed by his family's home. In 1913, he traveled to Malaysia, where he ran a hospital. Sivananda, who passed away in 1963, never again left India, but his influence is felt globally through the work of key devotees: Swami Vishnu-devananda, who came to the West in 1957 and founded the first Sivananda Yoga center two years later, in Montreal; Swami Satchidananda, who founded Integral Yoga; and Swami Sivananda Radha, who founded Yasodhara Ashram in British Columbia.
