The Grateful Dead is the debut album of the Grateful Dead. It was released by Warner Bros. Records in March 1967. According to the biographies of both bassist Phil Lesh and drummer Bill Kreutzmann, the band released the album as San Francisco's Grateful Dead. The album was primarily recorded at RCA's Studio A, in Los Angeles, in only four days. The band had wanted to record the tracks in their hometown of San Francisco, but no recording studios in the area had modernized equipment at the time

The Grateful Dead have a large legacy of recorded work that only continues to grow - you've heard about that 73 CD 'Europe '72' box set, right? It's a lot to consider, so to celebrate the late great Jerry Garcia's birthday (Aug. 1), we decided to narrow it down to this list of the Top 10 Grateful Dead Albums: 10. 'Dylan And The Dead'. Two years after Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead teamed up for a stadium tour in 1987, this live album, 'Dylan And The Dead' was released, collecting performances from the tour.

Choosing and justifying a list of essential Grateful Dead shows – 20, 200 or even 2,000 – is treacherous work. Records released the Dead’s debut album, The Grateful Dead – a sonically brittle, high-speed version of the group’s stage act and songbook – on March 17th, 1967. forward as songwriters and vocal harmonizers. The unplugged set in Dallas opens with a song from the Mother McCree days – The Monkey and the Engineer, by the Bay Area-based bluesman Jesse Fuller – and includes the traditional Little Sadie and the country mourning of Long Black Limousine, recently cut by Merle Haggard. The era is still here in Dark Star and Turn on Your Love Light.

The Unplugged session includes a wonderfully airy rendition of Dear Prudence, which like so many of these songs, was written during The Beatles’ sojourn in India, about Mia Farrow’s sister (a complete tracklist is here). The compilers of the release have tacked on three additional songs: Spiritual Regeneration India (also a birthday tribute to The Beach Boy’s Mike Love), an oddly upbeat studio run-through of Helter Skelter, and a free-form acoustic medley of traditional songs called Rishikesh No. 9 (also called "Spiritual Christmas")
