Suck on This is a live album by the band Primus, released in 1989. At the time of recording, the featured lineup of bassist/vocalist Les Claypool, guitarist Larry LaLonde and drummer Tim Alexander had only been playing together for "about two months". This along with Jane's Addiction's self-titled live album, are seen as popularizing the then-underground alternative metal genre and inspiring the groove metal genre.

That said, a good chunk of the album ended up in studio form on Frizzle Fry the following year, so aside from hyperfans Suck on This is going to be a bit of a secondary listen, though many of those same fans would claim it as the superior release. Certainly the band is flat-out throughout, its tempo-shifting riffing and h rhythm explosions benefiting from a fairly crisp recording.

The label was created in 1989 for the initial limited release of the Primus live album Suck On This. The band borrowed three thousand dollars from Claypool's father to fund the release and pressed one thousand vinyl copies of the record. The album was later licensed to independent record label Caroline Records in 1990 for its second pressing, the same label that released the Frizzle Fry album the same year. Primus then signed to Interscope Records, who released. the band's third album Sailing the Seas of Cheese in 1991 and all of their subsequent records for the next twenty. to Act like People in 2003 As an independent label, Prawn Song reissued the early, out-of-print, pre-Interscope Primus albums, as well as DVDs of some of their recent live tours.

Signed With Major Label. Selected discography. The Northern California avant-rock trio Primus provides a shining example for bands who want to succeed on their own terms. Fusing the skittering rhythmic attack of progressive-metal bands like Rush, the groove of funk and hippie rock, and the eccentricity of such experimental artists as Frank Zappa, the Residents, and Captain Beefheart, Primus has followed its own musical calling to large-scale industry success. Band formed in El Sobrante, CA, 1984; released first album, Suck on This, on self-administered label Prawn Song, 1989; signed with Caroline Records and released Frizzle Fry, 1990; signed with Interscope Records and released Sailing the Seas of Cheese, 1991; appeared in film Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, 1991; headlined Lollapalooza festival, 1993.
