The Old Kit Bag is the tenth studio album by British singer-songwriter and guitarist Richard Thompson, released in 2003. The title refers to the World War I marching song "Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag". When asked if the album had a theme, Thompson had no immediate answer, then said "I suppose the title is a theme of sorts.

Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile" is the full name of a World War I marching song, published in 1915 in London. It was written by Welsh songwriter George Henry Powell under the pseudonym of "George Asaf", and set to music by his brother Felix Powell. It was featured in the American show Her Soldier Boy, which opened in December 1916.

Electric is the fourteenth studio album by Richard Thompson, released in 2013. The album was recorded in Buddy Miller's home in Nashville in May 2012. Thompson took his stripped down "electric trio" band (himself, bass player Taras Prodaniuk and drummer Michael Jerome) to the sessions. Miller produced, played some rhythm guitar parts and brought in some local players to augment the trio, notably Stuart Duncan and Siobhan Maher Kennedy.

FINDING a critic with a bad word to say about Richard Thompson is as hard as finding a taxi driver with a good one to say about Ken Livingstone. Every few years another album comes out, and everyone agrees that the bloke is brilliant. Which probably means there are many people who would like to give him a try, but don't know where to start. The Old Kit Bag is a fine place.

Recent albums by Richard Thompson.

The Old Kit Bag, his twenty-fifth album, is chimerical rock girded by Thompson’s stringed arsenal - dulcimer, mandolin, harmonium. Thompson is saved from pretentiousness by how honestly he comes by his mannered delivery, how effortfully the heaving rhythms push into each measure and how every simple revelation sounds hard-earned.

Singer/songwriter Richard Thompson is a true legend in the folk rock. In the 1960s he was one of the founders of the seminal Fairport Convention. After a musical and marital commitment with Linda Thompson in the 1990s, eventually he chose definitively for a solo career. After a series of pretty polished albums, that Thompson took up in the 1990s under productional leadership of Mitchell Froom, he returned on Mock Tudor (1999) back to a more rudimentary sound. That trend he puts on the successor to The Old Kit Bag. Also this time little production frills, just a man with his guitar and a backing band, all pretty right on the tape. This approach is also apparent this time to work well. A large part of this album makes in terms of urgency reminiscent of his best work of the past. It is music that is so obvious that you almost wonder why only Richard Thompson goes it makes.
