Anthony Grove "Tony" Hillerman (May 27, 1925 – October 26, 2008) was an American author of detective novels and non-fiction works best known for his Navajo Tribal Police mystery novels. Several of his works have been adapted as theatrical and television movies. Tony Hillerman was born in Sacred Heart, Oklahoma to August Alfred Hillerman, a farmer and shopkeeper, and his wife, Lucy Grove.

The tale telling is well scripted in the part where old Pinto tells his tales of the Witches’ lair outside of the Ship Rock section of the reservation. Coyote Waits, to me, is a good, but not especially great, Hillerman novel. I admired a lot of the things that I always admire-the characters, the wisdoms of Navajo culture, the feel of the landscape, the characterizations. This book provided an especially melancholy take on both Chee and Leaphorn-Chee saddened in unrequited love for Janet Pete and despairing of his dual vocation as police officer and shaman and Leaphorn struggling with the sadness brought on from his wife’s death.

Coyote Waits is the tenth crime fiction novel in the Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee Navajo Tribal Police series by Tony Hillerman published in 1990. It was adapted for television by PBS in 2003. Chee is slow to go to the aid of another officer, Nez, who radios that he has found the person doing spray-paint vandalism on rock formations. Chee gets burned pulling Nez from his burning police vehicle.

From where we stand the rain seems random. PHOTOsnap Team added 6 new photos to the album Antiques.

The most prominent series is Tony Hillerman's series featuring Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee which has been in progress for about 15 years. The PBS Mystery! series, which usually focuses on British sleuths, has recently begun adapting Hillerman's stories which has occasioned the reissue of Coyote Waits, the third of the "Navajo Mysteries" with a tie-in cover blurb added. This writer hasn't read any of Hillerman's other books so comparison to them isn't possible; Coyote may not be a particularly representative title

COYOTE WAITS: Its title comes from a Navajo proverb, and COYOTE WAITS carries all the supernatural suspense for which Tony Hillerman's novels are famous. Officer Jim Chee is convinced that a drunken Navajo shaman, Ashie Pinto, killed a fellow officer. Getting them as a set is a good deal. I only wish there were other Tony Hillerman mysteries on DVD (not some of the amaturish knock offs, but the real thing produced, dircted and well acted by people who know how to bring a well loved story to the screen.

Title: Coyote Waits (TV Movie 2003). Two tribal cops uncover a plot involving a lost fortune, an historical artifact and a mythical Coyote on a Navajo reservation.
