English musician, DJ, singer, songwriter and record producer Mark Ronson has released four studio albums and twelve singles. Here Comes the Fuzz, Ronson's debut studio album, was released in 2003 and was critically acclaimed and a financial success, despite initially poor sales. It included three top 10 hits and won Ronson a Brit Award for British Male Solo Artist in 2008

Uptown Special will be remembered for one of the all time great pop singles, Uptown Funk featuring Bruno Mars. Ronson’s sound isn’t always so maximalist, and the record revels in its more understated tones and melodies, hugely informed by 70’s Jazz and 80’s Disco. But you can’t deny the pull of a genuine classic single. The album was helped to number 5 on the US Billboard 200, easily Mark’s most successful US release. It’s also the first time he’d struck number 1 in the UK. Ronson told Spin: I always come back to: Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, great late-’70s, early-’80s R&B.

Mark Ronson reaches new collaborative heights on the wonderfully funky Uptown Special. In addition to writing lyrics alongside Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon, the t DJ/producer enlists musical genius of all stripes, from Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker to Mystikal to Jeff Bhasker. While Stevie Wonder lends his touch to the astral melodies of the album’s opening and closing cuts, Bruno Mars pays brilliant homage to Prince on the propulsive Uptown Funk. Mark Ronson – 'Uptown Special'. What does the man who has everything in life truly desire? What could someone born into glitz and money, with a career as a music producer and DJ, with model good looks and a good-looking model wife really need ? Mark Ronson had it all, except a hit he could call his own. The transatlantic success of ‘Uptown Funk’ has changed all of that. He is finally complete. But what of the rest of the album? Well, ‘Uptown Special’ isn’t 11 tracks of ’80s funk pastiche. No, there are psychedelic rock pastiches (assisted by Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker), a few Yacht Rock pastiches and a hugely infectious James Brown pastiche (the Mystikal-vocalled ‘Feel Right’) as well. Ronson might object to the word pastiche. After all, he asked Pulitzer-winning writer Michael Chabon to write lyrics, which let’s be honest, The Darkness never did.

If Mark Ronson’s previous albums were united by formalizing principles (retro-soul makeovers of alt-rock standards on 2007’s Version, odd-couple duets on 2010’s Record Collection), the producer's strategies on Uptown Special are more conceptual. The Bruno Mars collab "Uptown Funk" is already a massive hit, and other guests include Mystikal and Kevin Parker of Tame Impala. If Mark Ronson’s previous albums were united by formalizing principles (retro-soul makeovers of alt-rock standards on 2007’s Version, odd-couple duets on 2010’s Record Collection), the producer's strategies on Uptown Special are more conceptual.

Indeed, apart from the involvement of Michael Chabon, whose lyrics color nine of the 11 songs, Uptown Special is business as usual for Ronson and co-pilot Jeff Bhasker. The two songs that don't involve Chabon made the earliest and deepest impressions.
