Focus is a jazz album recorded in 1961, featuring Stan Getz on tenor saxophone with a string orchestra. The album is a suite which was originally commissioned by Getz from composer and arranger Eddie Sauter. The pair would next collaborate on their soundtrack to the 1965 film Mickey One.

Eddie Sauter was one of the most inventive arrangers to emerge during the swing era. His complex and colorful charts were always innovative and defied categorization. Sauter originally played trumpet and drums, and later learned the mellophone. He studied at Columbia University and Juilliard, and from 1935 to 1939 he made a stir in the jazz world as the arranger for Red Norvo’s Orchestra. Sauter continued as a freelance writer for stage, film and television, including several collaborations with saxophonist Stan Getz. In the late 1950s and 1960s Sauter also wrote contemporary classical music, including several works for saxophone: . for the New York Saxophone Quartet, Tanglewood Concerto for Tenor Saxophone and Orchestra, and Piece for Tuba and Saxophone Quartet.

The composer Eddie Sauter, who arranged for Benny Goodman, and Getz have successfully united both strings and horn into one joyous celebration of sound. Both Getz's horn and Beaux Arts strings interact in a "call and response" which is why this music is unique among "Third Stream" jazz recordings. Few "jazz and strings" recordings have succeeded in their mission as well as "Focus". While "Charlie Parker with Strings" (1947-49) set a precedent, Getz and Sauter's work abundantly fulfilled the "Third Stream" vision. One of the great moments in the history of music is this album.
