It was released on February 7, 1973, by Columbia Records. Musically, the album departed from the "groove-ridden, feel-based songs" of the band's first two records in favor of more anthemic hard rock while featuring guitar and songwriting contributions by James Williamson.

Iggy Pop and the Stooges released 'Raw Power,' a David Bowie-produced proto-punk classic, on Feb. 7, 1973. The history behind Raw Power is a little more complicated. It both was and wasn't the third album by the Stooges. A few years earlier, the band out of Ann Arbor, Mich. had recorded a pair of albums (The Stooges and Fun House) for Elektra, but gained more notoriety than record sales. Breakup and drug addiction ensued. Enter Ziggy Stardust. David Bowie was a huge fan of their first two records and discovered a kindred spirit in Iggy after meeting him in New York. With Pop untethered to the Stooges and spiraling down the path of substance abuse, Bowie brought him to London.

Raw Power was the first Stooges album I owned. I was introduced to the world’s forgotten boy that day, and discovered one of the most dynamic figures in rock and roll history. The Stooges‘ two previous albums, the eponymous debut and the critically acclaimed Fun House, were hugely influential albums and the reigning opinion on the advent of proto-punk. The band broke up only to be urged to reunite at the behest of one David Bowie, who mixed what was to become both a controversial and, in my opinion, more influential album, Raw Power. To begin an album so strong usually means that the rest of the album is secondary to the opener, usually a single. For Raw Power, as most people who own it know, this is not the case. Take Gimme Danger, a song in which Pop trades in the raspy screams for a crooning baritone.
