After a string of children's albums and other side projects, Taj Mahal returns to his roots with Like Never Before - an eclectic assortment of styles featuring traditional covers and a new batch of originals.

Originally released in 1991, Like Never Before was something of a comeback album for the veteran blues singer-songwriter after a decade or so in the shadows, and following albums of poetry and children’s songs. And it’s a very contemporary album, some distance from the blues that had made his name. Guests like Daryl Hall, John Oates and Sheryl Crow leave a very clear mark on an album of intensely slick production typical of the early 90s. It’s no great surprise then that the better tracks are those given more minimal treatment – such as Blues With A Feeling, a relatively spartan piano and lap.
