Originally, the soundtrack to the 2005 coming-of-age film was intended to be done by Elliott Smith, but after Smith’s suicide in 2003, director Mike Mills engaged The Polyphonic Spree to write the music. Three tracks by Smith remain on the album.
The Polyphonic Spree leader Tim DeLaughter has penned the bulk of the soundtrack to the upcoming film "Thumbsucker," which marks the film directorial debut of visual artist Mike Mills. The album is due Sept. theaters three days later. Mills had previously coaxed Elliott Smith into handling the soundtrack, but he died in 2003 before completing work on the project

Thumbsucker is the soundtrack to the film of the same name, directed by Mike Mills. Mills was originally working with Elliot Smith to write the soundtrack, but only three songs were recorded before Smith's untimely death. The soundtrack was left untouched until Mills went to a Spree show. The optimisim and positivity it gave him prompted him to contact Tim DeLaughter regarding the unfinished soundtrack. Mills is of the opinion that the band "saved Thumbsucker.
