Emperor is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1991, regarded as highly influential by critics and emerging black metal bands. The group split up in 2001, but reunited from 2005 to 2007 for a few festival dates and brief US tours, and again reunited in 2013 to 2014. Emperor reformed for the third time in 2016. The group was founded by Ihsahn (guitar/vocal) and Samoth (then, drums).

Mayhem is much more than a band, their career represents the very evil fabric that helped make black metal seem like the most diabolical genre of music in the world. Between a member committing suicide (and the image of their corpse being incorporated on an album cover), murder and actual church burnings, there was a level of legitimacy to the chaos and evil the genre promised. On top of that, material like De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas backed them up musically as a weapon of true darkness. Which is a shame really because as much as the media needed a batch of authentic evildoers to bolster the genre's phantasmagoric reputation, some bands - like Emperor - were so much more.

With Maniac, Mayhem recorded the band’s first EP, Deathcrush in 1986 and 1987, and released it through Euronymous’s newly formed label Posercorpse Music. Mayhem release 6 picture disc vinyl box set Cursed in Eternity. According to Bård Eithun of the band Emperor: He (Dead) wasn’t a guy you could know very well. I think even the other guys in Mayhem didn’t know him very well. Later that year, the recording of Mayhem’s upcoming album, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas resumed. In Dead’s and Necrobutcher’s absences, Attila Csihar of Tormentor handled vocals, and Varg Vikernes of Burzum handled bass guitar.
