Licensed to Ill is the debut studio album by American hip hop group Beastie Boys. It was released on November 15, 1986 by Def Jam and Columbia Records, and became the first rap LP to top the Billboard album chart. It is one of Columbia Records' fastest-selling debut records to date and was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2015 for shipping over ten million copies in the United States.

Licensed to Ill. Beastie Boys. Released November 15, 1986. Licensed to Ill Tracklist. 1. Rhymin & Stealin Lyrics. Although they had been making records since 1981, License to Ill represents the Boys’ debut full-length album. It was released on . 1986 by Def Jam Recordings, a division of CBS/Columbia Records. It was co-produced by Rick Rubin & Beastie Boys, engineered by Steve Ett, and mastered by Howie Weinberg. A worldwide smash, LTI sold over 10 million copies in the United States, alone. Licensed to Ill Q&A.

The group’s influence on Eminem should be obvious to any listener, and the rapper spoke to Rolling Stone about it in 2013. Obviously, yes, there was something about ‘Licensed to Ill’ - you had the Zeppelin samples and their vibe.

Perhaps Licensed to Ill was inevitable - a white group blending rock and rap, giving them the first number one album in hip-hop history. But that reading of the album's history gives short shrift to the Beastie Boys; producer Rick Rubin, and his label, Def Jam, and this remarkable record, since mixing metal and hip-hop isn't necessarily an easy thing to do. Just sampling and scratching Sabbath and Zeppelin to hip-hop beats does not make for an automatically good record, though there is a visceral thrill to hearing those muscular riffs put into overdrive with scratching

Then came Licensed To Ill. The album’s title was a pun based on a 1965 imitation James Bond film, Licensed To Kill. Strangely, the album pre-dated a real James Bond movie entitled Licence To Kill by three years. Was it art imitating art imitating art? The album’s gatefold artwork was famously done by collage artist World B Omes and depicted an airplane crashing into the side of a cliff. Run-DMC were the template for Beastie Boys in so many ways: the loud drums and the shouted vocal delivery where bandmates would complete each other’s lines. And then, of course there’s the fact that Run-DMC actually wrote pieces of Licensed To Ill, including ‘Slow And Low’, which they originally recorded (with Rubin producing) as a demo that never made it onto their own albums. The first four lines of ‘Paul Revere’ were concocted by Run (Joe Simmons) for Beasties to use.

When the Beastie Boys released Licensed To Ill in the fall of 1986, it was as if they ripped a pin from a grenade and threw it into the centre of the music industry. artists - from Beastie Boys contemporaries to bands that weren’t even born when the album came out. Here, we’ve gathered a bunch of those friends, fans and collaborators together to discuss what made that first LP so special, their personal memories with the record and why each song will stand the test of time.
