The ciliates are a group of protozoans characterized by the presence of hair-like organelles called cilia, which are identical in structure to eukaryotic flagella, but are in general shorter and present in much larger numbers, with a different undulating pattern than flagella. Cilia occur in all members of the group (although the peculiar Suctoria only have them for part of their life-cycle) and are variously used in swimming, crawling, attachment, feeding, and sensation.
Ciliates - Life Cycle and Life History - Macronuclear Development. Life cycle and life history. The basic sexual process in ciliates is conjugation. In oligohymenophoran ciliates like Tetrahymena or Paramecium the macronuclear DNA are very large and contain many gene loci, while in hypotrich ciliates, like Euplotes, the molecules are small and contain only one or a very few genes. During the development of the macronucleus DNA is lost. These losses may be either between macronucleus destined sequences or they may occur within a sequence destined for the macronucleus. These sequences that are cut out from within a macronucelar molecule are called ies (internal eliminated sequences).
Symbiotic ciliates and bacteria have common ancestors. In their study, Brandon Seah from the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology and colleagues describe the partnership between ciliates of the genus Kentrophoros, which have lost their mouth opening and the symbiotic sulfur oxidizing bacteria that they depend on. This type of symbiosis is termed mutualism, . both partners depend on each other.
It was so colorful and exceptionally beautiful, I couldn’t help but look at it. And the best thing is that in the middle of the image there was the flower of life, painted in colorful circles :-). Absolute madness, these guys aren’t just some random people, and they spread this symbol over the entire planet and bring it to the masses
Ciliates are a group of single-celled, eukaryotic organisms that are easily recognized by their hair-like cilia, which they use to propel themselves in their environment, eat, and to for sensory perception. They mostly live in aquatic environments and can be free-swimming or live on the bodies of some hosts, inside the bodies of others, as parasites or as in the case of some, in a colony with other ciliates. Ciliates are special in that they actually have two nuclei (singlular, nucleus): a macronucleus (big nucleus) and micronucleus (small nucleus). Ciliates can reproduce asexually by growing.
