Syncro System is a 1983 album by Nigerian jùjú band King Sunny Adé And His African Beats. The album peaked at on Billboard's "Pop Albums" chart. It was the second of King Sunny Adé's three releases for Island Records, following on the heels of 1982's Juju Music, but was not as critically well-received as the first. The album was re-released in 1990 under the variant spelling Synchro System.

It was King Sunny and not Fela who became the first Nigerian artist to find major success in the West. His first international release, Juju Music, was released in 1982 and rightly praised for its subtle and distinctive mix of West African dance rhythms and guitar work. The Aura album is more experimental, with electronic percussion mixed in with the talking drums, and doesn’t have quite the same intensity. Even so, there are some great songs here, with a rousing burst of harmonica from Stevie Wonder on Ase, percussion from the great Tony Allen on Oremi, and further reminders of King Sunny’s skills as a guitarist on the stirring Gboromiro. These albums helped to change Western attitudes to African music back in the 80s, and it’s great to hear them once again.

King Sunny Adé, along with Fela Kuti, was a central player in bringing African pop music to the world. Is a major international release a strange choice for my usual showcase of rarities/oddities? This record combines the new and novel studio technologies (for 1983-84), like drum machines and synths, with traditional talking drums and good ol’ electric guitars, resulting in brilliant nch funkiness. So many styles of African music have been enhanced by electronic instuments over the years, but few have risen to such sublime heights. seriously, thank you so much for this! I have to say it’s easily the best King sunny album I’ve heard, reminds me of Remain in Light by Talking Heads (or should that be the other way round!). Tracked down a vinyl copy with a bit of hunting too. Fantastic blog, keep it going.
