Paul Winter and his group, the Paul Winter Consort, have performed around the world, from New York’s Carnegie Hall to the Miho Museum in Japan. One of the earliest exponent’s of world music, the group has also pioneered a new genre of earth music, (described as ecological jazz by fans in Russia), interweaving classical, jazz and world music elements with voices from what Winter calls the greatest symphony of the earth. The group continued to tour and record throughout 1963, and made their final album during the week of President Kennedy’s assassination. Members of the Consort that created Road included David Darling, Paul McCandless, Glen Moore, Ralph Towner, and Collin Walcott. Performing from the Miho album at the Miho Museum, Japan. In 1980, Paul Winter founded Living Music as the recording context for the Consort.

Icarus is the fourth album by American musical group Paul Winter Consort. It was recorded in 1971 for the Epic Records label and released in 1972. It was re-released by Epic in 1978 and by Living Music in 1984. The album was produced by George Martin.

The Paul Winter Consort was founded in 1967 by Paul Winter, who had already begun a promising career as a jazz saxophonist in the early sixties. After hearing the songs of humpback whales, he was inspired to create a new form of music which would bring together elements of music from around the world as well as animal songs, thus creating an orchestra of the entire world. The group's third album, Road, was released in 1970, and saw further lineup changes. Winter and Paul McCandless were the only remaining members of the previous lineup, with Bock being replaced by David Darling, and Beal being replaced by Glen Moore. Another Paul Winter Consort album came in 1991: a live recording from the 1978 Paul Winter Consort and guests called Turtle Island. This large piece also featured the poetry of Gary Snyder.

Paul Winter Consort Launched in 1967, the Paul Winter Consort became a forum for the whole range of musical genres Winter had come to love – from Bach to African music –including as well notable voices from the symphony of nature (as the whale, wolf, and eagle). Winter took the name from Elizabethan times and the house bands of Shakespearean Theatre, which adventurously blended woodwinds, strings and percussion-the same families of instruments he wanted to combine in his ‘contemporary’ consort-and allowed the players to embellish on the written parts. With this group, Winter became one of the. Astronauts of Apollo 15 took the Consort’s album Road to the moon with them and named two craters after the songs Ghost Beads and Icarus.

This, a reissue of saxophonist Paul Winter's finest album, marks a transitional point in his career from jazz to his own brand of contemporary instrumental. But one can simply revel in the lovely melodies, the contemplative sounds, and the tasteful production of George Martin, especially on the justly famous title track by Ralph Towner.
