The Yale Quartet's recordings of these works date from between 1967 and 1971. They attack the fast movements with a speed and energy perhaps matched only, but not always by the Emerson String Quartet. Slow movements are treated with great care and sensitivity, giving the Alban Berg Quartett a run for its money. The amount of vibrato used is about average for the recording period and never seems overbearing. Tempos can seem a little metronomic in places but certainly not in general. It has been called his most perfectly integrated large-scale work.

The Beethoven Quartet was a string quartet founded between 1922 and 1923 by graduates of the Moscow Conservatory: violinists Dmitri Tsyganov and Vasily Shirinsky, violist Vadim Borisovsky and cellist Sergei Shirinsky (half brother of Vasily). In 1931 they changed their name from the Moscow Conservatory Quartet to the Beethoven Quartet. In the course of its fifty-year history, the Quartet performed more than six hundred works and recorded more than two hundred Russian and international classical works.
