Monoliths & Dimensions is the sixth studio album by the avant-garde drone doom band Sunn O))). The album was created and recorded over a period of two years and features the collaborations of composer Eyvind Kang, Australian guitar player Oren Ambarchi, Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar, Dylan Carlson from the drone band Earth, and trombonists Julian Priester and Stuart Dempster.

Monoliths & Dimensions takes the idea even further, gathering collaborators- from Csihar and Earth's Dylan Carlson to Australian drone master Oren Ambarchi and vocalist Jessika Kenney, who sang so well on Wolves in the Throne Room's Two Hunters- for four tracks that push Sunn O))) in directions unforeseen: Riffs come wrapped in strings. Both an operatic female choir and Portland noise nut Daniel Menche sing opposite the Mayhem frontman.

This is quite possibly the perfect album of atmosphere, and it's prefectly complemented with the addition of choir, string arrangements, a full orchestra including trumpets and tubas, and the whole nine yards. Even better is the fact that none of this ever feels pretentious, and I never get the sense that Sunn O))) was bullshitting themselves and making a pretentious album from lack of knowledge on how to arrange the extra musicians. They're all. Don't get me wrong, here-the album features all of what fans have come to expect from Sunn O))).

Monoliths and Dimensions succeeds because it is the sound of a new music formed from the ashen forge of drone, rock, and black metal. In its seemingly impenetrable, slow, spacious, heavy sonic darkness, this is the new way forward for not only Sunn 0))), but for extreme rock music and possibly even what's left of the avant-garde.
