Complete your Duke Ellington collection. This record opens with "moon maiden", a hauntingly beautiful song. I was never listen Duck Ellington singing, and it's a BIG surprise.
This Pablo set has odds and ends taken from nine different recording/rehearsal sessions that find Ellington experimenting a bit with instrumentation and personnel, even taking a vocal on the tongue-in-cheek "Moon Maiden. Performances range from a couple of vigorous trio workouts and spots for Wild Bill Davis's organ to a few big-band performances. The Duke shows why he is one of the most formidable and innovative musicians ever. On the opening track, "Moon Maiden", Ellington raps his way through a celeste and voice work of early rap cool. The entire CD should be a part of every music lover collection. Even Duke's throwaways are head-and-shoulders above the best work of most other artists. There's a nice variety of material here, from piano trios that nicely recall the Money Jungle session, to pleasingly casual-sounding blues featuring the entire Ellington band - and what a band it still was, even by this late date. The recordings here show off the band in what may be its best light: casual, intimate settings, instead of concert halls or festivals.
This is the discography of Duke Ellington. Most of these recordings are listed by the year they were recorded rather than year released. Reissues are listed for most of the recordings released before the 1950s, as the original 78s are rare.

Duke Ellington: conjures a mood with a simple phrase. Photograph: Redferns. Unearthed from Duke’s legendary stockpile of private recordings, this dates from 1972 – just him and a grand piano, occasionally joined by Anita Moore and Tony Watkins, his vocalists at the time. Duke may not have been a virtuoso pianist (at one point he’s heard to murmur, This piano’s too honest; it shows all my flaws! ), but he had the composer’s gift of conjuring a mood with a simple phrase, or surprising you with a sudden shift in the harmony. And he was a wonderful accompanist
