Son of Schmilsson is the eighth album by American singer Harry Nilsson. Nilsson was being pressured to produce a follow-up album similar to his 1971 breakthrough, Nilsson Schmilsson, but instead, he created a more eccentric work. The album was produced by Richard Perry and features musical contributions from former Beatles Ringo Starr and George Harrison. Other musicians on the recording include Nicky Hopkins, Klaus Voormann, Bobby Keys and Peter Frampton.
The very title of Son of Schmilsson implies that it's a de facto sequel to its smash predecessor but, as always with Nilsson, don't take everything at face value. Yes, he's back with producer Richard Perry and he's working from the same gleefully melodic, polished pop/rock territory as before, but this is an incredibly schizoid record, an album by an enormously gifted musician deciding that, since he's already going unhinged, he might as well indulge himself while he's at it.
Nilsson Schmilsson is the seventh album by Nilsson. It was Nilsson’s most commercially successful work, producing three of his best-known songs. Among these was the number 1 hit Without You, written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of the group Badfinger. The album was the first of two Nilsson albums recorded in London and produced by Richard Perry. His work is characterized by pioneering vocal overdub experiments, returns to the Great American Songbook, and fusions of Caribbean sounds.
Son of Schmilsson is a follow-up to the very popular Nilsson Schmilsson album by Harry Nilsson. This re-issue CD contains all 11 tracks from the original (vinyl) release plus 4 bonus track; two previous unreleased songs, one alternate take, and one single version. The booklet is full of great photos - some candid shots taken in the studio during the recording and some posed. It also contains some great liner notes about the album along with quotes from the musicians and the late artist himself
